Once periodontal disease is brought under control with treatment, it is imperative that you continue with regular maintenance appointments every 3-4 months. Brushing and flossing at home daily is a must, but it is not enough to keep periodontal disease in check. Periodontal maintenance involves a deeper cleaning than normal and is done by a professional hygienist. Your dentist may also prescribe and use medicines to help reduce the bacterial count. If you do keep up with your periodontal maintenance appointments, you are more likely to keep your teeth longer. If you do not follow through, your periodontal disease may get worse.
